Some people have anxiety attacks while driving; this is a very dangerous and potentially harmful form of anxiety disorder. Anxiety attacks may occur while diving through particular stretches, like bridges, highways or hill slopes. Some people fear particular kinds of roads and experience these attacks while driving through them. If one has been in a road accident one might tend to relive the trauma while driving through a similar stretch of road. These anxiety attacks manifest as irregular and quick breathing, quickened heart rate, sweaty palms and irrational fear. This kind of attack might cause the driver to force himself or herself into an accident and is therefore extremely dangerous. When one feels an anxiety attack coming on, one should not try to run from it. If one gives in and stops driving, one is forced into the anxiety loop where the attacks become even more frequent, and more intense each time. So one should try to face one's fear and follow it through, and do this not because one must but because one wants be able to drive. It might help to have someone there to help one with one's anxiety problem and not drive alone. This can result in a reassuring stability and lend some confidence to an anxious driver. One should think of positive thoughts to calm one down in the advent of a potential anxiety attack. One should distract oneself from fears - maybe talk to the passenger, talk to oneself, listen to good music - basically train oneself to get over the anxiety and keep calm. |
