How Projector Headlights Work

The projector headlights are known by a number of names. The most commonly used names are polyellipsoidal and bi-xenon. The name is determined by the manufacturer and the role they are designed to play. Basically, the projector headlights are high performance headlights that are designed to fill the loopholes left by factory headlights that come with the vehicle. They are commonly used in luxury and sports vehicles. However, the headlights can be found as aftermarket add-ons that one can purchase and replace the existing ones. There are many benefits that you will get from this option ranging from the improved lighting to the boosted look of your car. It is, however, important to understand how they work.

Bulb

The classic headlights use two bulbs to give the lighting. One of the bulbs is designed for high beam while the other one is designed for low beam. The driver can therefore adjust the light to the desired intensity. However, when it comes to the projector headlights, there is only one bulb in place. The most widely used bulb is the HID Xenon bulb. Most recently, the LED bulbs have been used. With these bulbs, one is able to regulate the intensity of light without the need of having more bulbs.

Reflector

When it comes to the reflector, the projector headlights do not use the traditional parabolic shaped reflectors but an elliptical shaped reflector. Parabolic reflectors spread the light out. With the elliptical shaped reflectors, the light is focused to a single focal point. This is what results in a brighter light which is concentrated on the road. Drivers are therefore able to get a clear view of the road. The intensity of light is therefore not as a result of the amount of power drawn from the battery but rather the reflection given by the reflector. Concentrating light to one spot makes the illumination from projector headlights much brighter and hence preferred by people who drive at night.

Shutter

When it comes to the projector headlights shutter, it sticks out from the bottom side of the headlight. It therefore blocks the beam partially. The blockage results in a downward shining angle which is directed to the road. The top of the shutter is tapered which leads to a lower beam to the respective side. This means that projector headlights do not lead to shinning into incoming traffic. When switching to the high beam, the shutter is usually lowered. This eliminates the restriction thereby resulting in a brighter light. Customized projector headlights allow motorists to adjust the light to an intensity of their choice.

Lens

The shutter obstructs the reflection of light from the reflector. This means that a safety measure has to be added to concentrate the light in the right direction. This is where the lens comes in. The lens is responsible for the distribution of the light evenly to the targeted area.

There are many auto accessories that people can use to meet their needs. However, none customizes your car better than the projector headlights. They are the most widely used auto accessories when it comes to boosting the looks of a car.
