Are you a stay at home Mom who would like to make some extra income for yourself so that the family budget is not sacrificed for your personal pleasures? Or you just need to augment your husband’s income? One of the home businesses that you can consider is postcard printing. It is easy to do and the startup capital is not that big. You can work on your design for only several hours a day and then after a few days, you can already start printing them in bulk. Production time can be very flexible for your postcards. And depending on your set up, you can even just do the designs first and then print them whenever there are orders.

To help you start your home-based business, here are a few tips:

1. You will need to have a computer, internet connection, and a good quality printer. If you can afford a laser printer, the print quality would be so much better.

2. Think about the kind of designs that you would like to create and sell. Or you can classify your postcards, such as events, travel destinations, or whimsical. For example, for Christmas, make several designs with the Christmas. Or you could make templates with blank spaces so that your client can opt to put a photo in there for a personalized effect. If you are artistic, you can create your own graphics. If not, search the net for stock images and photos that are free to use.

3. Your designs can be created using a graphics or desktop publishing program. You might want to invest in Adobe Photoshop because of the many features that you can use. But if it is too expensive to buy, you can use GIMP—a free design software. Or you can use whatever kind of design program that you are already comfortable with because learning a new program can take time. Create several designs first so that you already have many designs in your collection before launching your business.

4. You can start printing some pieces for sample only and then just do bulk printing if you already have orders so that you will not have to invest so much on inventory. At the same time, if you print too many cards and they are not bought immediately, there are chances of your stocks getting damaged. You can either do the printing or commission a good quality printer in your locality.

5. Set up a website to market your designs. You can easily buy a domain name and set it up with free blog platforms. You can always use the free blog sites but having your own domain name would give credence to your business. That will show people that you are not a fly by night entrepreneur because you went to the extent of buying your own domain.

6. Get your website listed in popular search engines so that it is easily indexed and searched by consumers. Make sure that you have the right keywords so you are easily searchable.

7. You might also want to sell your postcards the traditional way. You can ask local stores if they will allow you to supply them with postcards for them to display. Usually, the items will be on consignment, so you will need to have an extensive inventory for this and be prepared for damage and returns. Or if you want, you can create a poster or a desk standee announcing your personalized designs and then the store can just take orders for you. They would usually ask for a percentage of your sales.

Postcard printing can be a good business for you, depending on how you manage it. If you want, you can start designing your postcards now and then just think of how you can market them later.
